Yeak is starting a new occasional blog: Yeak’s Giant Adventures! Yeak has been doing some fun things around Los Angeles and Southern California, but not always food related. We’re going start off with a really interesting one…
This weekend we went to the Scum and Villainy Cantina, a pop-up Star Wars-themed bar in Hollywood. Yep, we got our geek on. The Cantina opened a few months ago and seems like it will stay open for at least a month or two more. We bought our tickets in advance (in January!), and while there are days with drop-in times, we’d recommend getting them in advance.
So what’s it like? It’s set up roughly like the Cantina in the original Star Wars movie. It’s smallish, with the Cantina bar dominating the room, booths and a few tables. Fog machines, overhead laser lights and a few nice touches along with some decent music give it an interesting feel.
The menu is ok. Mostly bar food with tacos, nachos, and tots. It didn’t grab our attention but we did work the drink menu. The first and third themed drinks were great and we definitely recommend The Wretched Blue Milk. The Chosen One...not so much. They also had a decent beer selection, and Empire Lager was a nice touch.
Really, doing a a Star Wars-themed bar without licensing issues is a tough mark to hit. They did pretty well but could have used more staff or servers in some type of costume.
Did I say costume? Yes, I did and that makes the whole thing worthwhile. Go in costume for the full experience. It just makes everything better. And, yes, we did.
The Scum and Villainy Cantina was a blast once the crowd started coming in and everyone, including staff, was really nice and laid back. Once was fun, but have to think about doing it twice.
We have a lot planned around town coming up, including a few metal concerts this summer and we will be at Comicon (of course). We’ll also work on our picture taking.
